The Godfather has Left the Building

Sorry to say, sad to say, regrettable to say, but the verifiably coolest, soulfulest and dancingest man alive has passed away this Christmas morn my brothers and sisters. The late Great James Brown, the Godfather of Soul, passed away in a hospital this morning. For those of you still trying to figure out my musical orientation just know that James Brown is one of the greatest musuicians and performers to ever live and their never EVER will be another. From his lowly beginnings to superstasrdom, to pioneering genres such as soul, funk, and rap, as well as popularizing breakdancing, many peaople owe much love and respect to this legend, this icon, the man who could have everyone dancing before he even said "Hot Pants!"
Below is a flash player with some files I could find online of some of the King of Soul's best work. Many of his videos are also posted on YouTube. I've also posted a video compilation done to "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag" with a legendary James Brown Song, as well as some excellent footwork footage that really shows you why this man is a legend.

From Bloomberg.com:

James Brown, `Godfather of Soul' and Musical Icon, Dies at 73

By Linda Sandler and Amy Thomson

Dec. 25 (Bloomberg) -- James Brown, the rhythm-and-blues singer known as the ``Godfather of Soul,'' died this morning at an Atlanta hospital of congestive heart failure as a result of pneumonia, his agency Intrigue Music said today. He was 73.

Brown, also called the ``hardest working man in show business,'' performed more than 100 live shows a year, his agency said on its Web site. He had five shows scheduled this week at the Palace Theater in Connecticut, the Bergen Performing Arts Center and the Count Basie Theatre in New Jersey and the B.B. King Blues Club in New York.

Brown died at 1:45 a.m. today at Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta, Intrigue Music said.

Born in South Carolina during the Great Depression, Brown influenced the direction of music in the 1960s with a fusion of gospel and rhythm and blues. He had 114 entries on Billboard's R&B singles charts and 17 No. 1 hits on the Hot 100 singles charts, his Web site said. His first Top 10 pop single was the 1965 ``Papa's Got a Brand New Bag.''

He received a lifetime achievement Grammy Award in 1992 and was an original inductee into the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.

He picked cotton and shined shoes as a child and danced for spare change, the Web site said. Sent to reform school at 16, he met Bobby Byrd, a gospel group leader who gave Brown his start. Their Toccoa, Georgia-based band, called the Flames, switched from gospel to blues after hearing blues greats Hank Ballard and Fats Domino play, according to the Web site.

Mr. Dynamite

James Brown's career was crowned with plenty of nicknames. He was ``Mr. Dynamite'', ``the Forefather of Hip-Hop,'' the ``Funky President'' and ``Soul Brother Number One.''

He was also ``Mr. Star Time'', after his ``star time'' spot on the ``Live At The Apollo'' albums. Brown put up his own money to record a 1962 performance, which hit No. 2 on Billboard's album chart and introduced his spins, drops and faked heart attacks to a broader audience.

Over the next few years the singer developed his shouted- vocal and heavy rhythmical style which resulted in 1960s hits such as ``Night Train,'' ``I Got You (I Feel Good),'' ``Say It Loud (I'm Black and I'm Proud)'' and ``It's a Man's Man's Man's World.''

The Absurd, no, REALLY

If you enjoy different music you'll love these. One of the fusionest bands I've ever heard, hot jazz and psychedelic rock, and blues, and krautrock, and punk, and avant-garde, and noise.... They're from Cologne and they're called The Absurd. Since 1985 they've been showing music what's what... Ah, those Germanic peoples....always coming up with something cool, like Freud.....

The Rise and Fall and Rise of Man

Just a little thought drop for you all about the heights and depths that man can acheive. I'll give you a little case in point.
Yesterday when I signed into Yahoo! and AOL, the head news story had something to do with Senator Tim Johnson (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20061215/ap_on_go_co/johnson) who recently underwent surgery to correct a congenital blood vessel defect in his brain. Of course, the surgery was serious, but the Senator appears to be recovering, and it shows the amazing advances man has made in science. However, that's not how the media took it....
The important thing here to remember is the slim majority (literally 50+1) that the Democratic Party holds in the U.S. Senate. Rather than emphasizing the Senator's recovery, etc., the articles focused more on the danger (YIKES!) that the Republican governor of South Dakota would appoint a Republican to the Senate (one of the powers of the governor) in Johnson's stead. Now, it is fairly important to note that Johnson is more of a conservative Democrat (not exactly considered anti-abortion, though, which may add an interesting dimension for some people) and that his seat would only matter a little bit; but, of course, the politicos jump in the air. Yahoo! started doing the math and figured if a Republican was appointed, with VP Cheney's tie-breaking vote, the Senate could become Republican de facto. This is where the stupidity of man becomes GLARINGLY present. Instead of a sincere "Get Well!" it is a "Get Well so we can have a Democratic Senate!" Sad how many can be so disastorously selfish sometimes....
But take heart, there are also doctors and nurses working around the clock to keep Sen., no, scratch that, Fellow Human Being Tim Johnson alive. These are the heroes in this situation, showing that for every loudmouth malcontent, there are many more silent contents working behind the scenes to protect and serve humanity rather than ideologies. He is not Democrat or Republican, Conservative or Liberal, he is a human being and a human being that, like every other human life, is worthy of care and preservation.

Well, just popping in for a little post to maintain my sanity. School has been more of a chore than I had anticipated, and I've disappointed myself more than a few times. But enough of that! I'm excited in the promise that next term shows, especially as I'm becoming increasingly involved in campus activities, especially in trying to build up events that dorm students AND commuters can come to (apparently there are dorm only events). It's a difficult thing, too, as class schedules are uber-wacky and the film fests have been at inopportune times.
Outside of that I'm working on a podcast for The Transept (a periodical) as well as the periodical itself. All this while taking Physiological Psychoology? Can it be done? We'll see.
Also, I'm trying to get more and more involved with Madonna's Music Club, especially in the recording department (engineering, production, etc.) and/or performing. We shall see, but I think it's better to give people with talent the first try. Maybe song writing? (Think the Shaggs and Spinaltap....in short, be VERY AFRAID!!!)
Oh, and someone (to whom I'm now deeply indebted) showed me the coolest thing yet at Madonna...PIANOS!!!! That's right, the music dept. totally has pianos you can whale on between classes FOR FREE!!! Now, I know alot of you have heard me say "I'd pay $5 to whale on a piano right now," but IT'S FREE!!!!! Forget computers, etc., THERE ARE FREE PIANOS TO WHALE ON FOR FREE!!!!! It's like having a cake, and ice cream, and $1 million AND EATING IT TOO.....FOR FREE!!!!!

Anyways, I remain your careless blogger.
